Purbayan Chaterjee

Purbayan Chatterjees performance takes listeners on a transcendental journey into the soul of Indian music. Purbayan is a world-class sitarist from Calcutta whose prodigious talent has been recognised across the globe, enjoying massive audiences in Japan and America. Born in 1976, he started learning music as a child from his father, Partha Chatterjee, a disciple of late sitar maestro Nikhil Banerjee, as well as of sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan. He has appeared with Ravi Shankar and the famous tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. His playing blends calm serenity with technical brilliance, contrasting fiery fingerwork with purity and charm to produce music which is both lyrical and highly virtuosic.
